About the bursaries
The schemes are intended to make a contribution towards travel, accommodation and other related costs during the student’s study period. Study can include periods of specialist library or archive work supervisions with desired tutors (if available) or field work. For Oxford students it makes most sense to undertake the trip between Hilary and Trinity Term, unless they are enrolled on a DPhil which allows for more flexibility. Students need to be enrolled on their current course at the point of embarking on the trip and the trip should not extend beyond the calendar year following the application process.
Please note that students coming to Oxford have no official status with the University or any of the departments (such as visiting student status), and they will not be connected with a department or research unit. This usually requires payment of a fee which is not included in the bursary, and it is up to the student to apply for official visiting student status and pay the fee themselves. Occasionally, some departments or research units may agree to integrate a bursary recipient without official status on a partial basis, but this is not expected. Students who contact a department or research unit in Oxford in relation to their research trip should clarify that they will not have any official status with the University.
The Europaeum will provide documentation to help the bursary recipients to obtain a Reader’s card for the Bodleian libraries. Students planning for their trip to Geneva, Prague or Helsinki should get in touch with the contact person in the advertisement at one of these universities to see what support and help may be available for the trip.

The Oxford-Geneva bursary gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in an

environment conducive to building momentum on my dissertation research and getting to
know a host of kind and open people working on a range of interesting projects in a city at
the heart of global multilateralism — I recommend it to anyone interested in doing the same,
and hope to return to Geneva in the future!
The exchange helped me think about my work in new ways, and find connections with scholars in other disciplines. I was able to spend time learning from specialists ... who I would otherwise never had had a realistic prospect of getting to know. I also got to see how a different academic system operates, and see a social model whose assumptions of the public good were very different from discourse in the UK. I had a productive and deeply enjoyable time, and I’d warmly recommend an Europaeum exchange with Helsinki to anyone.
