Dr Marcin Walecki has been appointed to the position of Director to the Europaeum with effect from 1 October 2020.
The Trustees of the Europaeum are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Marcin Walecki as full time Director of the Europaeum with effect from 1 October 2020. In conjunction with taking up this post, Dr Walecki will become the first Europaeum Visiting Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford.
Lord Patten, Chancellor of the University of Oxford and Chair of the Trustees, commented “I am extremely pleased that Dr Walecki will be joining the Europaeum. He brings extensive experience of different European countries and his deep commitment to democratic values and to the importance of tolerance and freedom of expression chimes particularly well with the current concerns of Europe and its leading universities.”
Dr Walecki said “Given the strains and stresses facing Europe, the Europaeum is needed more than ever. Universities need to engage more with what’s going on in society and to work together across boundaries and disciplines. Europe and its citizens have to grow closer again, and universities can play a major role in this process. I am greatly looking forward to building on what has already been achieved”.

The Europaeum
The Europaeum is an association of leading European universities committed especially to connecting students in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. The universities join forces and pool knowledge to address contemporary European challenges.
Following a recent significant restructuring, and in particular the launch in 2017 of its Europaeum Scholarship Programme, its full members have grown from eleven in 2016 to seventeen today. They are the universities of Barcelona (Pompeu Fabra), Berlin (Freie), Bologna, Copenhagen, Geneva (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies), Helsinki, Kraków (Jagiellonian), Leiden, KU Leuven, Lisbon (Catholic University of Portugal), Luxembourg, Madrid (Complutense), Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität), Oxford, Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne), Prague (Karlova), and St Andrews in Scotland.
Dr Walecki
Dr Marcin Walecki is currently Head of Democratization Department of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. He has over 20 years of democracy assistance and governance experience working in more than 50 countries around the world. He holds a doctorate of philosophy in politics from St. Antony’s College at Oxford University and a master’s in Law (Hons, Class I) from the University of Warsaw. Among numerous executive and advisory roles he has held include being an Executive Director of the European Partnership for Democracy (Brussels), Senior Advisor to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES, Washington DC) and a Board Member of the School of Leaders Association (Warsaw). He was also a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence. As an academic, he has a strong interest in democratic governance and political corruption.
