Europaeum Scholars Programme December 2020 module
Our Europaeum Scholars are in the middle of an exciting four-day module on EU policy and institutions. Our plenary session was a discussion with Federica Mogherini, Rector of the College of Europe, who shared with us her insights into the EU’s role as a global actor and major developments during her tenure as High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Vice President of the Commission, with Professor Erik Jones (SIAS Bologna) as respondent. We also heard about the European Parliament and different aspects of its work from MEP Frances Fitzgerald (former deputy head of the government of Ireland), Francis Jacobs (co-author of The European Parliament), and Pietro Ducci (the EP’s DG for External Policies of the Union). Anthony Teasdale (Director of the European Parliament’s Research Service) expertly outlined how the EU institutions fit together.
Scholars have also been exploring specific policy areas, such as climate policy and industry post-COVID through discussions with Jake Werksman (special adviser to DG CLIMA), Marcus Lippold (adviser on energy to the commission), and Director Slawomir Tokarski (DG GROW). And we’ve heard high level reflections on the German Presidency of the EU from Nicola von Ondarza (SWP) and Roland Freudenstein (Martens Centre)
Through two workshops we learned about Gender Mainstreaming (led by Barbara Limanowska (EIGE)) and Advocacy in the EU (led by Ilenia Ventroni from the YMCA). We still have discussions of Higher Education Policy (with Sjur Bergan, COE and MEP Sabine Verheyen) and the Digital Agenda (with Flavio Grazian, ECAS and Patryk Pawlak, EUISS) to look forward to, as well as a day of group project work and a session with Alfredo Sousa de Jesus on Advocacy in the EU.
