We are delighted to announce that the participation of the following three new Scholars is now funded by the Dorset Foundation, which was set up by Harry M. Weinrebe (1914 – 2000):
- Donada Rata (University of Luxembourg), who works on European enlargement in the Balkans;
- Pablo Garfias Torrent (University of Oxford), whose research is on authoritarianism and ways to counter authoritarian politics; and
- Anna Kulma (Jagiellonian University), who is studying the promotion of political participation among European youth.
In recognition of this contribution, these Scholars will now be known as the Harry M. Weinrebe Europaeum Scholars.

About Harry M Weinrebe
Born 1914 and brought up in Boston, Harry first came to Europe with the US forces in 1941 and ended the war in Japan. He chose to make his home in the Far East, and in the 30 years or so before his death in 2000 that home was Hong Kong. His business career prospered, having built up successful agencies in the Swiss watch industry, and he indulged his fortune in the pursuit of his two passions which were music and horse racing.
Harry loved classical music, and it was largely his initiative which led to the establishment of the Hong Kong Academy of Music where he funded scholarships for talented young Chinese musicians. Back in London, where he had a pied a terre in Dorset House, he supported the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the Guildhall School of Music.
He was a pioneer not only in the development of his business career but also by his determination in his philanthropic endeavours to carry through projects which, in his thinking, made a difference to people’s lives and to society. That was the guiding principle which he bequeathed to the Dorset Foundation which he established.
