Europaeum Scholars Programme: March module on the Rule of Law

Our latest Scholars Programme module was held at the end of March. As well as making excellent progress on their group projects, the Scholars learned about Rule of Law in Europe. Sessions focused on rule of law with regards to the EU, European neighbourhoods, the role of the court, human rights, state capture, and corruption. They heard from leading academics, senior judges, the heads of key anti-corruption and rule of law bodies, investigative journalists and politicians. Among our many distinguished speakers were Adam Bodnar, Alex Brenninkmeijer, Delia Ferreira Rubio, Myroslava Gongadze, Murray Hunt, Hanne Juncher, Drago Kos, José Igreja Matos, Egbert Myjer, Michele Nicoletti, Márta Pardavi, MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor, and Corinna Wissels. Our thanks go to Rick Lawson at Leiden University with whom we collaborated on this module.

In April the Scholars working on just transition in the automotive industry held two short workshops with leading professionals working on different aspects of the transition. They discussed a range of issues such as how to support/compensate/reskill workers in changing supply chains, social protection, incentives/disincentives for industry, and what can be learned from the transition away from coal. The workshop discussions will help inform the group’s policy recommendation(s).
