Attending the first module of the Future Leaders of Europe: The Europaeum Scholars Programme in Oxford was one of the most inspiring experiences I have ever had. From the opening lecture by Matthew Syed at Balliol College, I felt surrounded by ambitious and thoughtful people from diverse backgrounds. The formal dinner that followed created a welcoming atmosphere and gave me the opportunity to meet fellow scholars, exchange ideas, and begin forming connections that would continue throughout the week and the next modules. The historic setting of Oxford added a special sense of purpose and excitement to the module.
Throughout the week, I was particularly struck by the range of social and global challenges we explored. Sessions on preventing homelessness, supporting refugees, addressing criminal exploitation, and promoting climate justice exposed me to perspectives and experiences I had not previously considered in depth. The discussions were not only informative but also highly interactive, encouraging us to reflect critically and share our own viewpoints. I found the breakout sessions especially valuable because they allowed us to engage directly with complex issues and learn from the diverse experiences of other participants.
What I found most impactful was the focus on leadership and practical change. Workshops on leading with character, discussions about Europe’s future, policy evaluation, institutional ethics, and community projects challenged me to think about the kind of leader I want to become. Hearing from experts, academics, policymakers, and practitioners gave me insight into how leadership can be used to create meaningful social impact. By the end of the module, I left Oxford with new knowledge and a stronger commitment to working harder with my colleagues on the policy objectives of the programme.
