NEW APPOINTMENTS AT THE EUROPAEUM
We are pleased to announce that, from 1 October 2020, Andrew Graham becomes a Trustee and Hartmut Mayer succeeds him as Executive Chair and Chair of the Academic Council.

Andrew Graham becomes a Trustee and Hartmut Mayer succeeds him as Executive Chair and Chair of the Academic Council
On 1 October, 2020, Dr Andrew Graham stands down as Executive Chair of the Europaeum (and Chair of its Academic Council) and Dr Hartmut Mayer completes his term as Acting Director. The Trustees of the Europaeum are delighted to announce that they have invited Dr Graham to become a Trustee and Dr Mayer to succeed him as Executive Chair and Chair of the Academic Council, and that both have accepted. These changes will coincide with the arrival of Dr Marcin Walecki as the new Director of the Europaeum.
Lord Patten, Chancellor of the University of Oxford and Chair of the Trustees, commented “I am extremely pleased with all these appointments. They provide continuity and an even stronger team”.
He added “I would like to play a special tribute to the achievements of Andrew Graham and Hartmut Mayer, but particularly to Andrew in his role as Executive Chair. Since 2016 we have grown from the equivalent of ten full members to the seventeen we have now. At the heart of this transition has been Andrew’s insistence that, with Europe in crisis, the Europaeum is now needed more not less. Embedding this thought in practice, has been Andrew’s conception of a wholly new Scholars Programme. He had the idea, raised the funds to support it and persuaded the Trustees and all our member universities of its merits. Together with Hartmut, who has given new focus to our core activities and who has led the discussions with most of the new members, Andrew has put the Europaeum on an entirely fresh footing.”
Andrew Graham commented “I am delighted to become a Trustee of the Europaeum. In addition to thanking Hartmut for his wise, energetic and total commitment, I thank Tracey Sowerby and Susanne Heinrich for all their help. I also wish to acknowledge all the assistance we have received from colleagues across the Europaeum, and especially, Professor van den Doel from Leiden, who, at several points, has been a critical catalyst of ideas. I look forward to being able to continue to encourage universities across Europe to work together and to engage more with what’s going on in society. These are ideals worth fighting for.”
Hartmut Mayer commented: “I am deeply honoured that the Trustees, in consultation with the Academic Council, have appointed me as the new Executive Chair of the Europaeum. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as Acting Director and I look forward to contributing to the future success of the Europaeum in a new role. We at the Europaeum all share the conviction that we need to engage more with free and democratic societies in Europe and beyond”.

The Europaeum
The Europaeum is an association of leading European universities with the aim of connecting students in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. It was created in 1992 as an initiative of the University of Oxford. The member universities join forces and pool knowledge to address contemporary European challenges.
Current member universities are Barcelona (Pompeu Fabra), Berlin (Freie), Bologna, Copenhagen, Geneva (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies), Helsinki, Kraków (Jagiellonian), Leiden, KU Leuven, Lisbon (Catholic University of Portugal), Luxembourg, Madrid (Complutense), Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität), Oxford, Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne), Prague (Karlova), and St Andrews in Scotland.
The Europaeum Scholars Programme
The Europaeum Scholars Programme is a two-year programme, taken alongside an existing doctoral degree and taught in modules at universities across Europe. It is open to any doctoral student at a member university whose work engages with European Studies, broadly understood. The Scholars work in multi-disciplinary teams and are required by the end of the two-years to present policy proposals to “make Europe a better place”. The programme for the first cohort of 30 Scholars took place in 2018 and 2019. The programme for the second cohort of 34 Scholars is underway, albeit virtually.
New Trustee – Dr Andrew Graham
Andrew Graham is a political economist, former Master and Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Trustee of Reprieve, and founder and Senior Fellow of the Oxford Internet Institute. Previously, he was Acting Warden of Rhodes House, Rhodes Trustee, non-Executive Director of Channel 4 Television and Scott Trust Board member. He has been the Chair of the Academic Council of the Europaeum since 2009, and in 2017 was appointed Executive Chair of the Europaeum overseeing and leading the new initiatives.
New Executive Chair of the Europaeum – Dr Hartmut Mayer
Dr Hartmut Mayer is currently Acting Director of the Europaeum and Director of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Oxford. He is an Official Fellow and Tutor in Politics and International Relations at St. Peter`s College, Oxford, and Adjunct Professor in European and Eurasian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, Bologna. He studied History, Politics and Drama at the Free University of Berlin before undertaking graduate studies in International Relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University), at Harvard University and the University of Cambridge (Gonville and Caius College). He received his doctorate in International Relations from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford.
