On its recent visit to Kraków, the Europaeum took the opportunity to recognise Professor Zdzisław Mach’s contribution to its work with the Jagiellonian University, stretching all the way back to when the Jagiellonian joined the network in 2005.
Prof. Mach, a Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology, is the founder and former Director of the Institute of European Studies at the Jagiellonian. His involvement and dedication to the Europaeum and its activities for more than 20 years has been greatly appreciated by students and colleagues across our network of universities. He has been a regular contributor as a member of the Europaeum’s Academic Council, where he represented his university, the Jagiellonian, and also, attended events jointly run with the Europaeum, such as, our recent Summer School on creativity and innovation in Kraków.
Europaeum Executive Director, Julian Gore-Booth commented:
“I was honoured to meet, and to be able to recognise the outstanding service of Prof. Zdzisław Mach on my visit to the Jagiellonian University and to the Summer School. His decades of dedication to the Europaeum and to the students and scholars we bring together is second to none.”
Previous Europaeum Director and now Steven Muller Professor at SAIS Europe, Prof. Hartmut Mayer, who worked with the Europaeum and Prof. Mach in different capacities from 2011-2024, added:
“The Europaeum owes a great deal to Professor Mach who fully devoted himself to the organization for more than 20 years. I overlapped with him for most of these years, and it was a pleasure working with him. He is a positive, pro-European voice from Poland, deeply respected as a scholar and a friend. We all learnt a lot from him about Polish society and Warsaw’s attitude towards European integration. The Europaeum would not be what it is without Zdzisław and without Jagiellonian, a most wonderful member university. Thanks for everything, dear friend. and good luck for a productive and inspiring retirement.“
