The Europaeum appoints new Chair and new Trustee to its Board. Former Chair to lead newlycreated International Advisory Council.

The Europaeum is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Andrew Graham as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees. Dr Graham succeeds (Lord) Chris Patten, who will remain associated with the Europaeum in an important new role.

With a career that spans being economic adviser to a British Prime Minister, Master of Balliol College, Oxford, and Founder of the Oxford Internet Institute – as well as Trustee of the Europaeum, Chair of its Academic Council and Founder of its Scholars Programme – Dr Graham brings a unique experience in higher education, public policy and international cooperation to the role. He has been a long-standing advocate of multi-disciplinary work and of fostering dialogue between academia and wider society.

Andrew Graham commented: ‘I am honoured to take this position at such a pivotal time for Europe and higher education. The Europaeum is a thriving network, well placed to make an even greater impact now than in the past. By engaging with exceptionally talented young minds, we aim to inspire innovative thinking on European policy and to help them develop the leadership skills needed to shape the future of our continent’.

On stepping down as Chair, Chris Patten will become the founder member of the Europaeum’s new International Advisory Council, comprised of leading public figures committed to advancing the organisation’s goals and work. The Trustees of the Europaeum express their deepest gratitude for his immeasurable contribution and are delighted to continue to benefit from his visionary leadership.

Chris Patten remarked: ‘I am looking forward to this next step, which will keep me close to the organisation. The Europaeum is a truly exceptional initiative and one particularly well positioned to empower the brightest young talent to drive positive change in Europe. Its mission – to foster connections that transcend disciplines, cultures and borders – has never been more critical’.

The Europaeum is also pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Maximilian Kiener, first Head of the new Ethics in Technology Institute at the University of Hamburg, as a new Trustee. The primary focus of Professor Kiener’s institute is to analyse the impact of AI and how ethical principles might be incorporated in its development at an early stage.

Professor Kiener added: ‘I had the privilege of being one of the first Europaeum Scholars in 2018, an experience that profoundly shaped my thinking and career. It is now my time to give back, as the next generation of young talent embarks on what is a truly transformational journey.”

The Europaeum

Founded in 1992, the Europaeum is a network of 17 leading universities operating in 15 countries across Europe. Its mission is to bring together students, scholars and practitioners to address critical European issues and promote shared European values.

The Europaeum’ s two main programmes – the Scholars’ Programme and the Core Programme – prepare postgraduate students in Europe for both academic and professional careers, complementing what their individual universities provide. They bring together talented young people – to think, learn, work and develop skills together – focussing on them both as individuals and members of teams, as they, in the words of the organisation’s founding mandate, emerge as ‘future leaders for a new Europe’ and help ‘shape the future of Europe for the better’.
